1. Jakob’s Law

Jakob’s law is one of the first laws to know, how to redesign website UX.

This law states that most of the time, users spend their time on other websites, which is why they prefer websites that work the same way.

It is better to choose designs that are familiar to the users.

Jakob, who introduced this law, said, most users get frustrated if they do not find what they are looking for and leave the site.

It is essential to improve that, so users do not face any inconvenience.

Steve Elliott, Franchise Owner, Restoration1 says “Users should be focusing on the products directly and not look for some irrelevant stuff. It is better to keep your site balanced and avoid overloading it as it confuses the users. People should find what they are looking for, so always make it up to the mark. Do not let their expectations down. If a user has a bad experience, keep it in mind and try to improve it next time instead of forgetting it.”

2. First Parkinson’s Law

According to this rule, you’ll do a task quicker the more time you have to do it. It means if you have 4 days to write anything, you will write it in four days and not before. Its history says; that the more time you have, the more relaxed you are. You will never end your time before the deadline. Lachlan de Crespigny, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Revelo thinks “If your work takes too much time to complete, improve its quality.”

Parkinson suggested writing accurately and avoiding useless research. Be more exact and strive to finish on time. This law also states to avoid working till late at night; try to finish it during the day because you are most productive during the morning.

3. Hick’s Law

This law states that the more options we have, the harder it gets to make a choice.

If you have thousands of options, it will become challenging to choose the accurate one. The users take time to choose the right one for themselves.

Djon Ly, Digital Marketing Manager at Statrys says “It is better to reduce the number of choices and stick to the most important one so it will be easy to pick one from them.” Another thing you can do is if the process is too long, cut it into small pieces so it can be easy for you. It is better to make things simple but unique. Highlight what is essential; this will help the users to make a quick decision. Be precise, focused, and determined, and everything will work accordingly.

4. Tesler’s Law

This law states that everything has complexity and uncertainty, which cannot be reduced. It is sometimes difficult to deal with it, but the users must cope with it and understand the complexity. The complexity cannot be removed but can be shifted, and this law says this.

Kathryn Smithson, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at PathSocial says “It is better not to overburden your users at the development stage. Never oversimplify things; it can become a failure; a little complexity is required, it makes the product unique, and users have to deal with a little inconvenience.” It is important to balance the difficulty. Before removing the complexity completely, it is better to work on the complexity and make it possible before removing it completely.

5. Pareto Principle

It says that 80% of the action effect comes from 20% of the effort. Sometimes, you give your best and receive nothing and vice versa.

7. Postel’s Law

This law is used for basic development guidelines of software. It states, “be conservative in what you do and be liberal in what you accept from others.” It has popularity amongst all these laws.

Scott O’Brien, Head of Sales at PPC Ad Lab says “Provide flexibility in interference, so users get anticipated. Ensure that users have a complete understanding of what they are looking for. Always ask for feedback and value your users.”

8. Serial Position Effect

When users are looking for something, they always pay attention to the first and last parts of a particular thing and will not memorize the middle part. It’s the human brain’s nature that it often forgets what happens between it. Make it good in every aspect so that the users will remember everything about it.  Peter Varadi, CEO, and technology enthusiast at MarketGap says “You should include help messages in between your UX design to provide the users right information they need and navigate through your website without having any problems.”

9. Law of Similarity

We always connect the things that look similar to each other to understand them better. Our brains analyze objects accordingly. “This law helps your users get involved because of the similarities used” said Jake Cowans, Founder, and CCO of CompanyScouts. It attracts users. It also helps improve the interaction and make your elements visible to improve your website’s traffic; otherwise, it can be a failure.

10. Von Restroff Effect

This law states that you always get attracted to different things. For example, in a row full of yellow mangoes, you will be attracted to it if you see a mango in red. Our brain always finds things like this.

While writing something on your site, it is better to use keywords or highlight the main object so the users instantly pay attention to it. Do not forget to highlight the middle of anything mentioned as it is easily forgettable. It is better to make it prominent so users cannot ignore the information. Mark Valderrama, who runs a hybrid e-commerce website Aquarium Store Depot, adds “Use the colors, fonts, and visuals wisely. The more it looks presentable, the more users you will get. Try to make it unique and attractive to receive a positive response.”

11. Zeigarnik Effect

This law states that unfinished tasks always attract more users. If you have mentioned “to have more information, please subscribe,” this will increase the user’s curiosity and benefit you.

People always remember the unfinished tasks because they want to know more about them; it is stuck in their minds.

Unfinished tasks create more motivation. Sometimes you have to work hard for it, but it is worth it. Make it more interesting, and keep it unfinished to make users curious and motivated.

12. Peak and Rule

This law states how impressions become memories. It may be positive, negative, or neutral, but it always stays in mind. Besides, the final experience stays in users’ minds as well.

13. Law of Pragnanz

This law states how the brain perceives visuals and makes them complex.

The brain always creates complexity out of simple things. It is better to keep things as simple as possible. Highlight the main object, and maintain the chaos. It is better to not complex things for the users, in this way, your website will work properly.

14. Occam’s Razor

Derek Bruce, Operations Director at Manchester First Aid Courses says “This law states that when you have the least options, it is simple to make decisions. Try to be precise with your options so it will be easy later to make decisions related to them.”

15. Click vs. 3-click Rule

This law states that completing your task should not take more than three clicks. Although it s not mentioned, some research says that. It is unnecessary to follow the rules all the time, but sometimes, they can be helpful.

Click once to get closer to your target, and try not to get distracted. Try to complete it without any hurdles.

You should click the page as fast as possible. It is better not to waste time on this, do it quickly. Pay attention, and clicks don’t matter, it is necessary to understand everything in a better way rather than paying attention to the number of clicks. It is better to have more than three clicks sometimes as if you have an effective form; it will be difficult to do it in 3 clicks. Eric McGee, Senior Network Engineer at TRG Datacenters says “Complicated things make people uncomfortable and frustrated; try to keep everything simple and make it easy for people to navigate without hassle.”
